You know how certain snapchat filters are only available when you are in a specific location? Well, that is a geofilter. It is a filter that only displays within a pre-determined geographic location, during a specific time period… and you can make your own!
Snapchat is all the rage these days, and you can make a personal touch with your next event by creating a custom geofilter. Whether it is a birthday party, bachelorette, or holiday party, you can use Snapchat’s website to create the design, assign its location/time, and pay a little fee for Snapchat to display your filter at your next event.
I created a custom Snapchat filer for the first time as a surprise for my future sister-in-law’s bachelorette party, and it was a huge success! Snapchat Geofilters can range from $10-$10,000 depending on how large the area and length of time are that you want it to be live. For mine, it was $30 well spent. I was told by countless times how great of an idea it was, and it just added to the celebration.
So here are the steps to create your own custom filter:
Own a Snapchat Account
First off, you need to have a Snapchat account. Don’t worry if it is a personal account, even if you are creating a filter for a business venture. If/when your filter is approved, it is not publicly associated with your username in any way. So as long as you have a login, you are good to begin. If you do not have an account, well it’s about time you get one! Download the Snapchat app and get started.
Create Your Design
If you have access to, and know how to use, design tools such as Adobe Illustrator, you can create your own design completely from scratch by using their templates. Once you are ready with your .png file, go to Snapchat’s On-Deman Geolfilters page, click “Create Now” and then select “Use Your Own” to upload your design.
If you do not have mad design skills, you can still customize one of their dozens of filters! You can find one for almost anything, and Snapchat creates customizable filters for upcoming holidays too. Go to Snapchat’s On-Deman Geolfilters page, click “Create Now” and then select “Create Online.” It will take you through basic steps of selecting a template and editing the colors and text.
Choose the Time
Once you are done with the design, you need to select the date and time that the filter should display. Snapchat only accepts filters that are within one month of their use, so no need to plan too far out. Select the starting date and time, then the ending. The shorter the time it is displayed, the cheaper the filter is, so keep that in mind. Consider when people will actually be arriving, when they would be likely to pull out their phones, and how late you want to keep it running.
Create the Geofence
Snapchat will then ask you to create the geofence, which is the specific area on a map where you want the filter to appear. Use the map to zoom into the location, and click on the screen to build a fence around that location. You can use their Google navigation to type in an address, zoom in/out, and drag the map to help you find the right spot. You are done with your geofence once you’ve made a complete shape that does not overlap, so make sure you end where you started. The smaller the area, the cheaper the filter will be, so be specific!
Submit to Snapchat
All that is left to do is fill out the final submit page. Give your filter a title, and pay the fee to publish. Snapchat will then review your filter for any red flags such as bad language and inappropriate content. You’ll receive an email once it is officially approved.
Have Fun With It!
Once the filter is live, show all your friends and bask in their giddy excitement to have a custom filter. If you click through on of the emails Snapchat sends you after you submit your filter, you can see how many times it was viewed, and how many snaps were created with it. It’s just such a fun unique element to make your event extra special.
Now go on with yo bad self, and snap it UP.
